Blog 6: Diverstiy

Diversity is the process of incorporating differences into your environment, life, work place, and other activities.  Not only does one need to incorporate these differences, but accept them, and the people who present them.  Someone who accepts diversity then has the ability to thrive on the unique traits of other individuals.
Working with people who have diverse backgrounds and educations will provide the opportunity for employees to learn from each other which ultimately will allow the company to grow.

While searching for diversity statements, I had difficulties finding "diversity statements"  so I researched mission statements that included diversity in their description.  The first one is from Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire:
Our Mission
The primary purpose of Sacred Heart Hospital is to provide a structure and the means whereby the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis can continue their apostolic mission to serve the sick, the aged, the poor and the terminally ill without regard to race, color, creed or national origin. The primary concern of Sacred Heart Hospital and the Hospital Sisters is the patient's well-being—spiritual, physical, psychological and social.

This statement says the mission of sacred heart hospital is, "to serve the sick, the aged, the poor and the terminally ill without regard to race color or national origin."
Which can be interpreted to say that they are striving to serve everyone equally regardless of their differences.  The term diversity is not included in this statement, however I believe that this hospital does practice diversity.

From the mayo clinic, I found a mission statement:

Mission

To inspire hope and contribute to health and well-being by providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research.
This clinic also had several value statements, I'll post the one about respect because it's closely related to diversity:
Respect
Treat everyone in our diverse community, including patients, their families and colleagues, with dignity.
The Mayo Clinic is devoted to provide care to every patient and one of their values is showing respect to their patients.  Again, The Mayo Clinic doesn't have a "Diversity statement" but it's apparent that they feel strongly about serving all patients equally.

Another mission statement I found was for a physical therapy clinic at Twin Cities Orthopedics; their statement says:
Our goal is to provide the highest quality of care at the lowest possible cost to the patient, through a combination of home-based exercises and "in clinic" manual therapy.
Our physical therapy staff members are trained in many orthopedic and sports specialty areas. They are strength and conditioning specialists, athletic trainers, and orthopedic or sports clinical specialists as certified by the American Physical Therapy Association. We work as a team with our specialty physicians to provide rehabilitation for foot and ankle disorders, shoulder and elbow disorders, spine problems and hip and knee disorders. Our therapists are skilled in manual therapy techniques, and design individual exercise programs to expedite the rehabilitation process and maximize function.
This statement does not explicitly say that they are focused on diversity; however it does say that their staff has a variety of strengths and specialties.  Twin Cities Orthopedics has a diverse staff which allows them to properly treat a wide variety of patients.

Women's Care of Wisconsin has the following mission statement:

Our Vision

Our employees will anticipate and respond to an ever changing environment and will be recognized for their efforts.
Their main objective is to provide women with all of the health and wellness services at one location.  Along with gynecologists, obstetricians and nurse practitioners, Women's Care of Wisconsin also employs physical therapists who specialize in women's health.  Having a diverse array of services allows patients to be treated at one location.

St. Mary's Hospital of Madison, WI has the following mission statement along with a set of values:
Our VisionThrough our participation in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ, communities, especially those who are economically, physically and socially marginalized, will experience improved health in mind, body, spirit and environment within the financial limits of the system.
Our Values In accordance with the philosophy of the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, we value the sacredness and dignity of each person. Therefore, we find these five values consistent with both our heritage and ministerial priorities:
Compassion
We reach out with openness, kindness, and concern.

Respect
We honor the wonder of the human spirit.

Excellence
We expect the best of ourselves and one another.

Stewardship
We use our resources responsibly.

Community
We cultivate relationships that inspire us to serve.

Again, this mission statement does not state diversity as a value or vision, but this hospital is devoted to serving everyone regardless of their ability to pay.  I interpret the value of respect to coincide with diversity; to be accepting of diversity you must respect people and accept their differences.

None of the mission statements of visions I found explicitly stated that they were a diverse organization or that they strived to be diverse.  However, many clinics focused on how their staff possessed a wide array of skills or how their clinic treats all patients equally and respectfully.  I think that both of those traits are important in a business and for the patients.  I hope to work somewhere where there is a variety in the skills of my coworkers; that will allow coworkers to learn from each other which in turn will lead to growth in the company.
